This is one of the nicest young Kuna we were to meet. True to her traditions, she could speak Spanish and we could therefore converse freely. She was 14, married (the short hair) and had a child. We are so sorry not to remember her name. The Eastern islands were much more friendly and truly Kuna.
From an early age the kids learn how to use their Ulus, and are very good sea-people by the time they reach adulthood as teenagers. This little girl was eight years old.
A group of men underway to harvest coconuts at an offlying island.
A housewife bringing home a load of firewood.
Some huts had tin roofs, but most were traditional palm thatch.
There was a small airstrip nearby, this plane was flying the colours of "Regional Airlines"
We soon had an entourage of kids following us about. Here the boys pose for a photo...
...followed by the girls.
Suddenly we were surrounded by Ulu's, I asked one of them what was happening. He explained that the Sahila (Chief) had instructed all able bodied men to head over to the airstrip and remove all the gravel and loose stones and cut back the long grass. In total subservience, the entire village set off to do his bidding.
This pic taken by Pete on yacht YAMANA shows the Ulus returning, some of them hanging on to Gilana to chat.
An Ulu waits for tomorrow.
This is the petrol station.
This is a typical Kuna toilet, we called them "Splash-huts" for obvious reasons.
On the reef outside we saw this Blue Chromis (Chromis Cyanea)
